World Changers Week 2012
Gautier Gears Up for World Changers Week June 18‐23 2012!
Due to an overwhelmingly positive response to the 2011 World Changers week, the World Changers project has once again been adopted by the City of Gautier’s Neighborhood Services Department. As a result, the week of June 18‐23, 2012, has been set aside for the World Changers organization to come to Gautier from places yonder to spruce up our beautiful city. This past summer, World Changers, a faith‐based organization of building professionals, junior high, high school, and college aged students from across the country, traded in fun and paying jobs to help Gautier’s homeowners in need. In one week, World Changers provided labor to re‐roof, repair and repaint housing, and install handicap ramps in sixteen owner occupied homes. Additionally, the group built an obstacle course at Singing River Elementary School and a gazebo for Home of Grace. Building supplies were provided by local churches, businesses, civic groups and individuals, and all work was performed free of charge. A resident wrote, “I enjoyed talking with all of you. You all came a very long way to do this work, and I think you did a good job.” Another resident stated, “Thank you to World Changers and all who helped them. I love my new porch!”
“Both individual property owners and community organizations have been helped through the work of this charitable group,” said Margaret Tucker, the city’s Neighborhood Improvement Coordinator. This year the goal is to rehab at least twice as many homes as last year! Clearly, sponsorship for building and landscaping materials will be needed for World Changers week 2012. Applications can be downloaded here and they are available for residents at City Hall.
