Jackson County Math & Computer Science Building
The Jackson County Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) provides a dynamic location for quality, affordable higher education opportunities in growing Gautier. The college, celebrating its 93rd year in 2005, has been an integral part of Gautier since 1965. The Jackson County Campus draws a wide variety of students whose interests range from fine arts to technology and commerce.

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), co-located on campus, offers students an extension program to complete a bachelor’s degree without ever leaving home. Residents, local workforce, and retirees enjoy a variety of academic, vocational and continuing education programs.

As the cultural center for the community, the campus plays a vital role in bringing residents together for entertainment, enlightenment, and social events. The art gallery and fine arts auditorium host artists and performers of local, regional and national acclaim.

Enrollment:

A total of 3,750 students enrolled at the Jackson County Campus in the fall of 2004. The college also serves its community through other noncredit programs, including non-traditional courses accessed online through the Virtual Community College.

 

Programs:

The Jackson County Campus offers 26 career and technical programs to prepare graduates for immediate employment, including computer, cad cam design, electrical and mechanical engineering, and environmental laboratory technology.

  • Allied health programs, such as the Respiratory Care and Medical Radiological Technology Programs along with degrees in Nursing, have received national board certification and outstanding commendations.
  • A National Science Foundation grant supports a new Database Administration Technology program.
  • Adult Basic Education/GED classes allow students to earn a high school equivalency diploma.
  • Institute for Learning in Retirement provides programs for people of all ages.

Workforce Development and Business/Industry Relations:

  • During FY 2001, there were 606 persons enrolled in the apprenticeship program at the current Northrup Grumman Ship Systems facility, and another 3,052 employees received special in-plant certifications.
  • A Small Business Development Center is located on the Gautier campus and offers counseling, resources and research, and training to new and expanding small businesses. (Contact telephone: (228) 497-7876)
  • The college offers Workforce Development Services, including pre-employment training and customized retraining, to assist local businesses in sharpening the skills of their employees and remaining competitive. (Contact telephone: (228) 497-7809).
